I feel your pain Carl,

   Somebody (Andrei) will have to chime in on the NetworkManager magic 
needed. I have always fought with it for at least 15.0 - 15.4 would not 
install it, so when I (as you tried) went to Yast to set up the wireless 
device (on boot), it always worked like a champ.

   Otherwise, I just want to do it manually with ifup and iwconfig, etc...

   Thankfully, on Tumbleweed back in early 2025 when I set it up on my 
laptop, it worked the same way 15.4 had and I had no issue with it.

   NetworkManager is mature and is more than capable of handling getting 
the device configure -- but I have to admit -- I haven't the faintest on 
what the incantations are for it.

   There is a nm-cli tool that let's to handle configuration from the 
command line. That's something I'd look into if I were making another go 
at using it.
