Okay,

Now I'm pretty much sold. Ublock-origins, NoScript, Ghostery, and a
single sidebar using ctrl+b for the firefox bookmarks menu works.
Sidebar is still a bit cramped, but no vertical space lost.

I'll have to thank OldTimer for the push to try it. It's based on
Firefox 152 as well, so not really losing anything. It uses the sane
user-preference install in ~/.config/zen so you can just copy your
password files (key4.db, logins.json) from your existing
~/.mozilla/firefox/xyz... profile to your zen profile and you are good
to go.

But, you do need your favorite FF extensions to control the cruft on
the internet -- and at least the ones I use work with zen and pin their
icons in the sidebar. Solid option if FF can't get its ads under control.
