You got slightly lucky, there are some packages in 15.6 that have 
migration code in there post install scripts in the last version so you 
should always fully update to 15.6 before updating to 16.0. beyond that 
the migration tool mostly just simplifies the process. I zypper dupped 
my one leap machine from 15.6 and it was fine.
