Glad you go some of it updated and working. This sounds like a 
nail-biting exercise in trust and firmware. Good thing we have smart 
folks on the list like Gertjan and Andrei that can help in trying times.

Don't laugh, I still have BIOSs on diskettes.... and it is a 
pucker-factor moment each time one must be applied, as you watch the 
box-drawing characters slowly tick from left-to-right across the terminal...

30 years of that and it's hard to look at firmware updates any other 
way. It's not like you are flashing an executable over to a Pi or 
Arduino or TI board. Consequences of a failed update on a new laptop 
bricking the thing are quite a bit more ... consequential...
