I've seen it happen often that the DM tries to start before the kernel has the
graphics system ready to run, and when the DM doesn't automatically retry to
start, you get a shell prompt instead of your GUI login screen.

Your log contains

which may indicate that's what happened.
It also has several of these:

I suppose it might be that your 13 year old Haswell i5-4200U's 1.6G base clock is
a little slow for the size current kernels and initrds have grown into. TW's
7.0.12 is 3.4 times the size of 2013's 12.2 kernel 3.4.63, and its initrd, 3.8
times the size.
