Follow up,

I seem to have solved the issue with gmail. It looks like this was a
gmail issue with it providing the default "Sent Mail" folder, but tbird
providing "Sent" as the default. Also the setting for Archives to "All
Mail".

What I ended up doing was changing the settings, compacting all
folders and then rebuilding the indexes. After the last rebuild of "Sent
Mail" things seem to have settled done and tbird is back to being a
pleasure to use (for now).

Global index is off, but the quick-search [ctrl + shift + k]
continues to work just fine.
