Turns out they do this because they are forced legally to do this.

You buy a book in a shop. You digitize it. Now you have two copies of 
the book, while you only bought one. You are entitled "move" your book 
to different media, but not to have two copies. So you legally are bound 
to destroy one of the copies.

And you can not distribute the copy, it is your own, for yourself only.
