i have nearly the same results with Kernel 2.2.17 on a 
Pentium 166 MMX Processor and 32MB of RAM. in an embedded System.

My experiences was the second of the 2  Memory's (PS/2 type) was defect.

after changing the Memory, my system runns now stable....
at least after 2 weeks now.
