I've experienced this in the early days, the solution was to rebuild the 
akonadi database. Both memory and CPU usage went back to "normal" after all 
the indexing was done. This for ~8 IMAP accounts, ~200.000 emails. A couple of 
months later I switched from mariadb/mysql to postgressql, which definitely is 
faster. The only negative side effect in both cases was that I had to recreate 
my ~20 filters, but I took that as an opportunity to review them and 
reorganize them.
