That did not help, but you gave me a good hint with "desktop session":

According to https://userbase.kde.org/System_Settings/Desktop_Session
I set "restore manually saved session" and that worked!

I saved a working desktop session and after setting "restore
manually..." the desktop starts fine now :-)
