Input method not inherited in sub-shells on ssh?

Hello,

I was only recently introduced to Suse, but I am quite certain that I am
already in love with it! It is truly an amazing distribution. I am using
version 10.1.

Japanese input using scim and anthy works like a charm usually. However,
when I tunnel into the machine using ssh -X, I can input Japanese only in
the shell I logged into. What I mean is, if I launch any other programs, say
another xterm or gedit from within the present xterm using "xterm &", then I
am no longer able to input Japanese in the new xterm window. toggling the
input method keys has no effect.

When I am working directly on the PC, the same thing works. What am I doing
wrong? What is not being inherited during ssh?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
