Yes, that's the best way to do it. You don't really need to set the
INPUT_METHOD variable here, but it doesn't hurt of course and the
other lines are necessary if you want to start scim with your own
~/.xim file.

setting the variables in your ~/.bashrc as well helps if you
log into a remote system using "ssh -X" because ~/.xim is sourced
only on the system where the X-server is running. But
you need to have these environment variables set on the remote
system as well if you want to use scim from a remote shell.
