Multimedia softwares for digital Music and Video

Hi !

 I am looking for softwares running under Linux in order to create 
Digital Musics and create some Videos (Mpeg-1) with Special effects 
(Like video that we can see in some Games, like Sid Meiers  Alpha 
Centaury during Introduction).

  Does Linux Support the in-Sound Card very well, in order to play Synth 
and save tracks on disks ?

 What kind of Material do I need to get ? (I am a beginner for such kind 
of work)
