As for Amarok not playing any more than 20 song and without audio.  On 2 
systems I tracked it down to a defective /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.25 for 
the 20 songs.  Also devices /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer permissions.  If 
Amarok, or kmix tries to use dsp or mixer with the default settings I 
get no sound (also when kde4 plays its boot music).  I change 
permissions to 666 and it works.  Adding a user to /etc/group audio 
didn't seem to solve the problem.
