Hi Sascha,

I had similar problem but only with oS 11.1 and Kubuntu 10.4, with older kernel.
My VIA VT1708S worked OK on oS 11.3 without any special tweaking
(except "muting" Smart 5.1"). All systems are 32bit architecture.

I'm using front connectors for headphone and MIC.

Here is the reference to my alsa-info results:

In 11.1 the solution was updating to alsa > 1.0.22 and using alsaconf
and alsamixer.

What I noticed is that on my system alsa driver is 1.0.23 and on yours 1.0.22.1.
I currently use the kernel 2.6.35, but I'm almost sure I've checked
alsa version after installation and it also was 1.0.23.
