I always fell sorry, when reading things like this. Crippled software so
often creates confusion about what should work, and how.

The best option, of course, is make the changes so that the 
missing parts explain themselves well. E.g. when you try to load an mpeg clip, 
it responds with a message explaining the need to reach out to packman or
try a different format like ogg. This is of course additional work and 
thus rarely done.

I see two other less invasive options:
 - Never ever cripple. Just drop. Maybe replace by a pull-in-proxy-package, that 
   knows which package version from which external repo works well, and suggests
   installation when called.
 - Mark the package prominently. E.g. as in in rename our crippled "blender" to
   "blender_le" ("limited edition") or something.

Would that make sense?
