ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 800x600 -r 25 -i :0.0+4,29 -b 8888k tree48.mpg

works well for me. Note the k!

no target pal-dvd, no such limitation :-)
I start running into the limits of my poor CPU now, while encoding....
