Check their permission on /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer.  For some reason 
openSuSE sets them up as 660.
Also the group user make sure you are listed . I have seen this and 
asked them to fix it.  Also now after a zypper dup add something to 
KDE4.  Lastly take a look a lsmod and see if the sound is loaded.

If not try yast2>hardware>sound
