I use a path to multimedia:libs in my home:plater repo as it's primarily for multimedia work, Packman has a path to the openSUSE Update 
repo. So my package builds against the same as multimedia:apps does. Packman is for anything that openSUSE can't provide due to patents and 
licenses. I'm pushing to have the original cdrtools (also in home:plater) in Packman but I have to allow it to exist with wodim. Wodim has 
a package called "cdrkit-cdrtools-compat" which provides links that are named the same as cdrtools's cdda2wav, cdrecord and mkisofs. I'm 
also preparing an ffmpeg enabled blender for Packman but I'm still fixing a few problems that have come to light since collaborating with a 
Fedora packager, we're working on an "undefined-non-weak-symbol" in one of the openCOLLADA libs.
We (multimedia) are pushing multimedia updates that are in factory to tumbleweed. Tumbleweed takes packages from factory and builds them in 
a release environment so they should be the same as updates. I see that Packman has a tumbleweed repo as well now.
I've always had the latest packages in my system, it's the only way to test, either from my home or from multimedia. I don't think I have a 
single stock 11.4 package on my system that I maintain and all this is mixed with Packman as well. If I pick up a problem I track it down 
to the offending package and fix it, this way bugs get fixed before they're noticed.
Unfortunately I can't do everything at once although I try sometimes.
I haven't tested grip yet, I've never used it and I'm hoping you will. Some of the patches I added add new features they will all be noted 
in the changes file.
