12.1 x86_64 SMplayer locks up X

Fresh install a few days ago, KDE3 and Gnome with libdvdcss 1.2.10-6.1 
installed and Pacman repo enabled. SMplayer plays audio CDs OK, but 
attempting to play a video DVD or .iso file made from a DVD locks up the 
machine (except for mouse) within a few seconds of image display in output 
window whether run in Gnome or KDE. Video is Nouveau/2D/C61 6150SE rev a2. Is 
this a bug someone who can do something about it already knows about? Ideas 
where to start troubleshooting?
