What video driver are you using? Start mplayer in an xterm and look
for the lines:
==========================================================================
AO: [alsa] 48000Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)
Starting playback...
Movie-Aspect is 1.33:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO: [x11] 720x576 => 768x576 Planar YV12 [zoom]
^^^ this is the driver
Other samples:
VO: [gl2] 720x576 => 768x576 Planar YV12 [zoom]
VO: [vdpau] 720x576 => 1024x576 Planar YV12 [zoom]
etc. You can set the driver in Options -> Preferences -> General ->
Video -> Output driver.
