Hi Gary,

Suse made a bit of a cock-up on the 8.1 distribution. They implemented SCSI 
emulation on all CD drives but didn't set up the device links corrrectly. The 
following fix was suggested

- Correct setup of SCSI Cds

I won't pretend to understand it, but it worked for me (also a newbie).

There's also a bit of a permission problem. You need to do

chmod a+rw /dev/sg0

Apparently sg0 is the general scsi controller.

Problems like this come up frequently on the suse-linux-e list; you might be 
better off trying there.
