Video camera tape to CD

Was thinking about trying to convert some tape (VHS) to CD, or 
straight from the Cam to CD. Has anyone tried this in Linux, what 
programs would you recommend for this project? Also how much 
recording time will typically fit on to a CD. I'm not looking to fit 
a whole VHS tape on a CD but something like a short video of a home 
event, or hobby project. I have a Nvidia Geforce3 Ti200 with 128 megs 
of ram. It has video in type connection so I assume this would be 
suitable for my input
