I'm in the same place, actually.  Someone mentioned to use the
*second* ALSA device listed in the MIDI setup dialog of kmid,
which works great.  I hadn't noticed until your message, though,
that trying to play a MIDI file by clicking in Konqueror gives
"Couldn't open /dev/sequencer. Probably another program is using
it."
