My apologies for my previous brain dead suggestion...  Streamer used to 
come with xawtv, just noted it now comes with v4l-tools on SuSE 9.0 pro.

With streamer you can pull multiple images, streams or a single image 
from a v4l device, check it out.  Something like:

streamer -t 1 -o foo.jpeg
