sorry to be so long (went fishing)
1.  If distortion is present at main vol = 80 %
	reduce it-- does distortion disappear at say 60% or 40%?
If distortion does not disappear--reduce pcm to 10% and see what happens
	you may have to raise main volume up to hear anything but there should be 
less distortion.
If distortion does disappear,  you may lower pcm to say 10% which will give 
you more room to play with volume min to max without distortion

one other note:  may sets of speakers have external hardware amps (duh!)
and external hardware volume controls.  Make sure these are turned at max @ 
30% others wise, these alone will overdrive or over-power speakers and cause 
distortion.

did you update to alsa 9.xx  http://alsa-project.org ?
