FWIW I have an ASUS A7N8X deluxe (the one without firewire built in) and 9.2 
sitting in its box - this weekend I'll try upgrading first and probably a 
fresh install and let you know

Sorry Guys but lost the original post, the cure for the muted sound is the same as the cure on Suse 9.1 and is listed here in the SDB:-
