Indeed, most of the time that will do, and it usually works very well. The 
problem is, as you mentioned, with stale drivers. For instance, the SuSE 
script fetches 6111 drivers, the most recent being 6629. There's a 
significant difference in performance from one to the other (e.g., about 30% 
better performance in doom3 with 6629, at least in amd64 platforms).

On the other hand, you have to be prepared to deal with more things manually, 
for instance, the 6629 version of the drivers needs at least one patch to 
work properly (see patch in thread: 
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=40126&page=1&pp=15). As 
usual, a trade off between convenience, stability and raw performance...
