no sound out

Hello, I am using IBM NetVista 6830-CAU to SuSe8.1. The machine 
comes with a build-in speaker, and it works. However, when I plug in 
an extra speaker, the sound did not switch to it and still comes out 
from the machine. Any idea how to fix it? Thanks.
