I just installed mplayer and friends from the packman repo, and I was 
good to go in 5 minutes -

    apt-get install MPlayer

I was really looking forward to spending hours downloading files, 
tweaking configs and trying to get things compiled, but I wanted to 
watch some videos, so no time for tinkering....
