Windows XP may be taking the audio track from the cd as data so it 
wouldn't need the audio output of the cd drive.

On some cd drives you can get to the audio in three ways.

The cd drive processes the data on the cd and presents the audio in two 
forms analog and digital (both requiring a cable to an audio input on 
the sound card). The other method uses your computer to process the data 
on the cd into audio.  This just uses the sound card as a D/A output 
device(no cable from the cd drive to the sound card needed).
