As much I know .dat Is VCD File formet when u open a vcd u can see  5 
folders with MPEGAV folder (.Dat video file  live's here )
  In windows  HeroSDVD Player even Windows    Media Player can play this 
.  But In linux u can  try  ( Xine ; Mplyer ) if u have it .
but i am not sure !
