What explanation? 32 bits application is smaller and need less memory/cache,
so it spend less time on memory access, have better cache hit rate, and so
runs faster (if everything other is exactly the same).

(Of course, if CPU is slower is 32 bit mode, resutls can be different. But
remember, Intel adapted 64 bits into their processor in a big rush, after
AMD, so I will not be surprised if it is slower by itself in 64 bit mode).

I compared Oracle on the same hardware in 32 and 64 bit mode (with 32 and 64
bit Linux) about 1 year ago and saw the same - 20 - 30% difference (32 bits
is faster).

64 bit benefits starts when you need to process 64 bit data OR when you
neeed to access 64 bit memory space.
