That would be the case if we were using a file system.
However we are using raw partitions for the registry
and voting disks.  According to Oracle, this is a
valid, supported, configuration; and it does work, but
only until the next reboot.

Yes, I have seen that document, and the SUSE 10
version.  However it doesn't describe how to change
the permissions on /dev/mapper
