  i'm going to answer my own question here -- when i downloaded the
appropriate ATI driver for my radeon xpress 200m chip and built the
corresponding rpm file, that rpm file has, as a dependency, the 32-bit
libstdc++ package, so i was forced to install that.

  i'm curious about that -- why the need for the 32-bit package when
this is a fully 64-bit system?  just curious.  once it was installed
and i finished the configuration, everything seems fine.  i wonder
what other software i'll eventually try to install that will have a
32-bit dependency.
