Unfortunately I'm a bit short of money... though I know these drives are 
currently not that expensive.

I have a Samsung / TSSTcorp (BTW, have Samsung and Toshiba merged drive 
production!?) SH-182M with the latest firmware dating from 06-2007, 
this drive also supports light scribing.

According to the "RAM Promotion Group" Samsung, LG, Toshiba and all the 
big ones are part of the DVDRAM specifiaction, so it really would be 
nasty if their drives hurt their own specifications... (

Before you replaced your drive, have you tried a different DVDRAM media 
brand? I have used Verbatim 4,7G 3x speed DVDRAM media.

I see, LG works for you, the question remains, does this generally apply 
to LG or just to certain drives...? Maybe we should start a little 
survey at the opensuse list who uses what drive and whether it works.
