selecting the right patch and kernel source pairs

Dear list members:

Currently I am using Suse 9.2 with its default kernel 2.6.8-24.11-default 
on a PC box.  I would like to try packet-writing.  I looked at http://web.
telia.com/~u89404340/patches/packet/2.6/ for the available patches.  My 
questions are:
1.  Can I use the default suse kernel sources to patch or I do I have to use
vanilla kernel?
2.  If I can use the suse default kernel which patch should I apply for the 
kernel mentioned above?
