On my G5 when booting with a kernel later than ec9b3a9 (drm/nouveau/i2c: resume use of i2c-algo-bit, rather than custom stack) it just powers off during boot. There is now an undocumented option CONFIG_NOUVEAU_I2C_INTERNAL that reverts back to the state before ec9b3a9, which allows me to boot through to X, but it doesn't really work well. The nv driver is still miles ahead.
