Das mit dem Font scheint mir ein Problem mit SuSE 9.2 zu sein. Wenn ich 
Java-Swing-Anwendungen starte, bekomme ich eine ähnliche Fehlermeldung:

Warning: Cannot convert string 
"-b&h-lucida-medium-r-normal-sans-*-140-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1" to type 
FontStruct

Beim connection-Error kann ich nur raten. Versuch doch mal, ein
'export DISPLAY=localhost:0' - hat bei mir manchmal geholfen.
