Possibly this may have value to a user. It should be fairly accurate and
repeatable.

A procedure (not the definitive method, just one way) followed to:
 Create a VMware Virtual Machine
Run openSUSE Education liveDVD inside (for testing without burning)
 Install openSUSE Education inside
 Install a server version inside
 Check installation procedures
 Easily start over if needed
Allow openSUSE Education to run concurrently with a main windows OS.

PC used:
 Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, Dual CPU T3400 @2.16GHz 2.17 GHz,3GB
Mem,160GB HD,Vista Home Premium 32 bit
With an ethernet connection, wireless, DVD/CD
Ethernet connection cabled to our network
Probably should have about 20GB free space
The iso is about 3GB, Final VMware openSUSE Education machine is about
10 GB

Free VMware product used:
VMware Infrastructure Web Access 2.0.0 Build 128374
  VMware Server 2.0.1 Build 156745
Note: VMware program installation is not described.
Slight issues configuring Vista Home Premium to allow it to run.

openSUSE Education reference Use a browser on the host PC with separate
tabs to each site

First: Create a virtual machine (Basically makes simulated h/w)

Download, install and test VMware Server 2.0

Reference http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Live
Download openSUSE-Edu-li-f-e-11.2-1-i686.iso and the MD5 hash file. (Or
current files)
Absolutely verify the download to the hash file data to guarantee a good
iso.
DigestIT 2004 was used.

Store the iso in an easily found directory.
VMware creates a Virtual Machines directory
A sub-directory named Common was created to store the iso.
This isolates the iso to help stop inadvertent deletion.

Start VMware Infrastructure Web Access ~ Desktop Icon (It will run in
IExplorer)
During this procedure there is a series of windows to create the virtual
machine.
After entering data you may need to click Next to proceed.

Highlight the Inventory Tab. (It indicates the Host PC name)

Click the Virtual Machine tab then Create Virtual Machine

Name and Location
Name: Replace "Virtual Machine" with some name. Ex: openSUSE EDU
Guest Operating System
 Click Linux operating
Select the Version Ex: Suse Linux (32-bit)
Memory and Processors (Memory can be adjusted after the machine is created)
Size: 256 MB Ex: 1024 MB Minimum 512MB RAM+200M per thin
client user
Processors
Count: 1 Ex: 2 Change as required
I plan to use 2 as some performance issues with our current 11.0
server build.
Thin client PXE booting seems erratic and general response
sometimes slow.
Hard Disk
Click on Create a New Virtual Disk
Properties
Capacity: Ex: 20 GB should not need this much
  Location: Default used
File Options: No selection. (Allocate immediately takes the
full amount)
  Disk Mode: Default (Persistent)
Virtual Device Node: Default (SCSI, 0)
  Policies: Default (Save before notification)
Network Adapter:
Add a Network This will be eth0 and connect to the main network
    Network Connection: Bridged
    Connect at Power on: Yes
CD/DVD Drive
Host Media: Use an ISO Image
Properties Necessary to boot the openSUSE Education iso
Browse to the image file Ex: [standard]
Common/openSUSE-Edu-li-f-e-11.2-1-i686.iso
  Connect at Power On: Yes
  Virtual Device Node: Default (IDE1,0)
Floppy Drive Not necessary to Add a Floppy Drive
USB Controller
  Add a USB
Ready to Complete Check what's been done
Click More Hardware Click Finish instead if only ever to run a
liveDVD.
Click Network To be eth1 for thin clients.
Network Connection: VMnet9 Wireless port on this PC, will
be a NIC eventually
Connect at Power On: Uncheck Yes Do not want NIC confusion on the
installation
                                        After openSUSE is installed it
will be changed
Ready to Complete ~ again. Click Finish if everything looks correct

A Green click box with Success in the Task window and openSUSE EDU in
the Inventory window indicates
the virtual machine is built and ready for running the live DVD, etc.

Optional:
Use Explorer to browse to c:\Virtual Machines\openSUSE (or name you
selected)
There should be 4 small files, less than 3mb total.
Copy or zip the folder to some other location.
These files describe the machine and can replace current ones to start
over.
At that time other files may also need deleted

Second: Run the live DVD on the virtual machine.

Start VMware Infrastructure Web Access

Highlight "openSUSE EDU: in the Inventory tab (or the name you created)
The right side window shows various tabs.
Summary; Shows the configuration of the virtual machine just created.
Console: click on this tab. A red square and Powered Off should be
displayed
Click on the Green triangle above the tab to start the virtualPC
The message will change to Green triangle and Powered On
Click in the window as indicated to open the console
Another window will pop up with openSUSE starting
The window will go black for a while then return to openSUSE
Eventually you should see the desktop
In this case the third window in the instructions did not display

The live DVD is now running.
Hover the mouse over the two pc's icon on the task bar and you should see:
Wired network connection 'Auto eth0' active
Right click on the icon and select Connection Information
If your network has DHCP you should see the IP information.
Open Firefox and browse. Etc., Etc.
To shutdown do a normal shutdown and eventually the window will close
leaving the main window open.
You may click on Log to the right of the Green triangle or just close
the IExplorer window

Third Section: Installation of openSUSE on the virtual machine.

From the liveDVD follow the procedure Education/Live/Install
Click Live Installer
Click Next for License Agreement
Set / change date time time zone click next
Click Edit Partition Setup (Partition changes for initial release only)
Make note of the proposed setup
Device Size F Enc Typ FS Type Label
Mount Point
  /dev/sda 20.00 GB VMware,-VMware Virtual S
/dev/sda1 1.48 GB F Linux swap Swap swap
  /dev/sda2 7.69 GB F Linux native Ext4 /
  /dev/sda3 10.82 GB F Linux native Ext4 /home

Highlight the /dev/sda3 line, right click and delete
Highlight the /dev/sda2 line, right click and Resize then Custom and
enter 12GB
Highlight the /dev/sda line, right click and Add Partition Select
Primary and the remaining size.
Format as Ext4, Select Mount Point as /home
Compare the new proposed setup to original.
It should be identical except /dev/sda2 is 12.00 GB and /dev/sda3 is 6.51GB
Click Accept and Next
Enter data for Create New User uncheck Automatic Login

Finish install

At the Reboot Select Reboot Later then do a normal Shutdown.

The iso must be ejected before a reboot.
After the window closes, return to the VMware Infrastructure Web Access
window
Click Summary
Scroll down to the CD/DVD Drive 1 location
Click the down arrow, then Edit
Uncheck Connect at power. Click OK
Reboot as previously to complete the installation.
There should be an Automatic Configuration window on the reboot.
Some downloads information will be displayed
At the login screen select the user and enter the password

You should now have a Gnome Desktop
You can click the System Monitor for various status information
Resources should show 2 CPU's, Memory, Swap and Network Activity

NOTE: If desired, follow Optional: (see above) to save this machine for
easy restoration.
