Why not just set up LTSP server and use that? LTSP does not require any modification to hard disks. You can also dd the live DVD iso to 4G USB stick to use, root password can be given on the stick, this is not very reliable either so only recommended for testing and installation. Best thing to do is install Linux on one partition on the laptops, educate the director that it is quite safe and will not damage the hardware.
