nvidia frame buffer device

Hi all,

I just installed SuSE linux 7.3 on my ultra 5.
The onboard videographics has only 2 Mb of video RAM. This means no
1280x1024 in true color (or better) :-(

So I added a nvidia TNT2 chipset based PCI graphic board to the ultra 5.
My plan is to compile my own kernel supporting nvidia frame buffer and
thwen running Xfree 4.x using the framebuffer device.

Compiling the kernel (2.4.18) works fine. Booting is does not :(
I read something about init not working with 2.4.18 but my kernel does not
even begin booting..

I am using a /boot partition (ext filesystem) and a root partition
(reiserfs!). Also these partitions are on the slave disk on the primary
controller.

What do you guys think, will this plan eventually be working?

Do I need tot do something else then compiling the kernel (make vmlinux) ,
copying it to /boot and modifying /etc/silo.conf?

Will silo be able to reed silo.conf at boot time on the reiserfs
partition?

Do I need things lijke usb, input core support ?
