init cannot open ttys

I am running Suse 7.3 sparc on an E250. I saw this in my messages
file today:

Jun 20 02:04:18 dali mingetty[1340]: /dev/tty4: cannot open tty: No such device
Jun 20 02:04:19 dali init: Id "4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

This is happening with the other 5 ttys as well. It never used to
happen. However, yesterday, the server was relocated to another site,
and now it has no keyboard or monitor connected to it.

I stopped the messages, by commenting out the tty lines in
/etc/inittab. Did I do the right thing, or is there a better solution
to this problem?
