Yes you are right i think Dave's patch missing in that build of X from gentoo  
...I encouter that in 7.1 RH's 4.0 X where was no Dave's patch ....

recomand you to recompile it from RH's 7.3 SRPMS wich include the patch ...
(for me work perfect)
you can also download from www.auroralinux.org and try using that RPMS if will
fit into your gentoo withowt ugly dependence problems ....
