If you have an ipchains setup that you're happy with,
there's probably not a lot of incentive to redo all
that work for a new system. However, iptables is
significantly more functional, especially when it comes
to stateful filtering. Iptables will be able to handle
some filtering chores that are not possible with ipchains.
Try searching google for "iptables vs ipchains", and
you'll come up with some good comparisons.

If you decide to use iptables, I'd highly recommend
Robert Ziegler's book:
