This is PROBABLY not your problem, but it's something to check. I have
encountered this trouble with some monitors and older machines. It seems
there is some kind of probe of the monitor type at power-up, and with
some combinations of hardware, this probe will just hang.

So try this... unplug the monitor at least until you can tell the drives
have been probed, then plug it in and see if you get anything. It's my
experience that by the time the drives get probed the monitor probe has
finished.
