Hi

I can briefly explain why you cant mirror the /boot and swap partitions.
swap if for swapping memory onto hard disk just like the page file in
windows. So mirroring this partition wouldn't really achieve much as the
contents are temporary and disposable.
The /boot partition hold the files to boot Linux, as Linux is not running
when it is first accessed then mirroring it with raid 1 one is not possible.
However it believe that it is possible to boot of a hardware RAID5 partition
depending upon your hardware.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [suse-sparc] Newbie: SuSE Sparc64 and Software RAID on Ultra 5

I am new to Linux (and any flavor of unix in general.) I am trying to set up
software RAID 1 with all my partitions. I am able to do this via YaST2, but
I cannot set up mirroring for the /boot or swap partitions. I get a message
that says "Error: you cannot use the mount points /boot and swap for RAID."
Is there a step-by-step or FAQ available for mirroring the /boot and swap
partitions? It seems rather daft to not allow this at all... Any help would
be appreciated!

Thanks...
Adam
