RE: Newbie: SuSE Sparc64 and Software RAID on Ultra 5

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I realize that hardware RAID is the way to
go for performance and reliability. If I had the option right now, believe
me, I would go for it! ;-)  I just thought that software RAID would allow me
to run a completely mirrored system, allowing one drive to fail with no
interruption in service. I gather that this is not the case... Software RAID
is essentially, only for "data" partitions and not system-related ones. 

A good friend of mine is a Systems Admin, who runs RedHat Linux 8.0. All of
her partitions are on Software RAIDed partitions. /boot is on md0, /swap is
on md1, etc... I thought SuSE Linux would have this functionality as well.
:-(  

If anyone knows of a trick to get this to work, what a wonderful world it
would be! ;-)

Andrew is absolutely correct.  The benefit of a Raid1 partition for swap
partition would be negligible (waste of hard drive space).

I'm also assuming that you are using Linux software RAID.

If you had a *hardware* RAID controller, you'd be able to run any RAID
configuration for any drive or partition you'd like because the OS would
only see a single drive/partition (the hardware would "hide" the actual
physical layout of the RAID partitions)
