Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was exactly the problem: the last partition extended (according to
the partition table) beyond the end of the disk. Attempting to run
parted on that drive elicits an error, and it won't print the partition
table. Since anaconda uses parted during its search for installations to
upgrade, and parted fails, the upgrade search fails.

Luckily, the last partition was an extended partition that only contained
swap, so it was easy to delete the swap and the extended partition, then
re-create the pair making sure they were of suitable size this time. Upon
reboot (and redoing mkswap and swapon), then boot again with the tao-4
CDROM, it now finds the tao1 installation.=20
