Thanks, Ed, for the hint.

I had discovered that myself earlier today, and have been struggling
since then to figure out how to configure cyrus imap. Found a short
"how to configure cyrus imap on RHEL 4" in the RH knowledgebase, which
I just went thru and it worked.

Why did I pick cyrus? Because it was the first thing I found on the
tao CDROMs that mentioned imap. I'd have had no clue that dovecot would
provide imap or pop3 (or that it even had anything to do with mail). If
I had to go look up every package whose function I did not recognize
based merely on its name, I'd still be at it. So I chose cyrus imap
simply because it was the first thing I saw that might do the trick. Found
it frustrating: hundreds of pages of docs, at least by the time you
get into the cyrus-sasl docs, too, and nowhere to be found an easy
(and accurate) "how to configure it to do pop3".

so, frustrating as it was, cyrus imap is now providing pop3 service and
my wife is again happy.
